Death Star: A Rollercoaster of Relaxation

January 29, 2019 by Staff Writer

Death Star by The Giving Tree

Death Star, a Sensi Star and Sour Diesel cross, maintains the good parts of both parent strains. Blending a pleasant body relaxation and a head high that didn’t go skyward, I found myself humming along to “The Muppet Movie” while planted on my couch.

The high reminded me of walking through the top deck of a slow-moving ferry; my nose was on a gentle roller coaster of slightly sweet earthiness and fresh kettle corn, followed by a lingering light fuel scent reminiscent of a motocross track the day after a race, and then a pungent sniff of roasting, but unseasoned, Portobello mushrooms.

White Mountain Health Center: Healing High Up on the Mountain

January 23, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

White Mountain Health Center – Sun City, AZ

White Mountain Health Center is an award-winning destination dispensary nestled between Phoenix and Sun City at the base of the beautiful White Tank Mountains and home to Amy & Al’s edibles and Sweet Science concentrates. Decorated with cannabis art and apothecary artifacts, this one-stop shop features a comfortable waiting area, spacious product floor, express window and a medicinal merch desk brimming with accessories, glass pipes and more. In addition, WMHC also offers delivery services and hosts their kitchen and lab on site, meaning their edibles and concentrates are always fresh!

The People

Inspired by the devotion of cannabis activist and owner Butch Williams, this self-described “mom and pop shop of the industry” works closely with its patients and the community.  Coupled with years of research provided by medical director Dr. Sue Sisley,WMHC’s collective knowledge and kindness can be seen at every level of the business. “We are family-oriented, patient-driven — we love our employees and we stay true to our values,” declares wholesale manager Amy Buchholz. “We take pride in the quality of our medicine and what we do, as well as taking care of — and educating — our patients.” I certainly found this to be the case as my upbeat budtender Nisha gave me a tour of their impressive selection.

The Product

WMHC’s tiered flower system offers an average of 35-40 strains at any given time, 15 of which are provided by their personal grow, featuring a few of my favorites like Pre-98 Bubba, Chemdog 4 and Grand Daddy Purp, aka The Cream. Their expanding edibles program delivers sweet and savory morsels including honey, capsules, confections and more, all of which are accurately dosed, potent and made with quality ingredients, ranging from 30mg THC candies to a 400mg THC brownie. In addition to their selection of tinctures and topicals, they also deliver an excellent offering of concentrates from their brand line that includes cartridges, shatter, RSO, live resin diamonds and their new oil syringes. I also discovered an array of industry favorites like Baked Bros, Uncle Herbs, High Grade, Green Halo, Kiva and Timeless. I found everything I was looking for and more, making WMHC a top-shelf dispensary that is well worth the journey.

Grow Sciences: Dedication to Research Results in High-End Cannabis

January 19, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Grow Sciences – Arizona

It’s easy to see what really matters at Grow Sciences, as co-founders and co-owners Matthew Blum and Michael Cuthriell, CEO, love talking about it. “I often hear everyone here saying, ‘Our flower, ourconcentrates,’” shares Blum, who is also the head grower. “It is one team, it is one family, operating toward one goal: elevating Arizona’s game to the next level … and being super scrupulous business operators at the same time, and doing things the right way. That’s really what Grow Sciences was founded on … being a learning facility, where we know we’re going to make a ton of mistakes, but we’ll learn and forward the industry, not just copy what other people have done.”

The Product

Extraction tech, Jacob Karp shared a flower rosinthey’re working onthat reminded me of John Bayes’ Green Bodhi line I was lucky to enjoy in Oregon. Blum then discussed a top-end live hash rosin delight whose equivalent I’m told commands $100-150 a gram in California, coming soon to the Arizona market. Proud of their research and development process, Blum says they toss out entire batches that don’t measure up, refusing to risk patient health. “Transparency is one of the items we sell to them,” he says, referencing the tours they give to dispensary agents and partners. “You can come here, see the medicine you’re going to be ingesting into your lungs, stomach, wherever, and know you’re actually getting something we’re not going to kill you with.”

The Business

Grow Sciences secured their current facility in April 2017 andmoved in their geneticsline that December. They came to market in May 2018 and recently completed the expansion of their current grow site—but they’re not done yet. “We are a B2B2C company, so we work hard to have a direct relationship with our customers,” notes Cuthriell, who runs the post-production and executive side of the business. “Investing in our own dispensaries is a natural progression, as we believe we can share our story better than anybody.”

Smoked Almond Toffee Bar: Relaxing Chocolate Masterpiece

January 10, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Smoked Almond Toffee Bar by Highern Chef

My eyes widen with excitement as they scan the smooth surface of Highern Chef’s 200mg THC Smoked Almond Toffee Bar. My mouth waters as I pull it out of its box and break off a few 10mg-portioned squares. Buttery flavors of cocoa blend seamlessly with subtle notes of coconut and cannabis as the decadent milk chocolate dissolves softly over my palate, mingled with sweet bits of crunchy toffee and smoky salted almonds.

Before long, my stress and anxiety are all but forgotten, washed away by a tide of creamy euphoria that captivates my frame of mind with stimulating confidence and allows me to focus on my tasks at hand. My state of pain-free bliss lasts for hours, slowly fading until it’s time for another morsel.
