Six Weird Stories to Take Your Mind Off Reality

February 4, 2019 by Staff Writer

Ready to take your mind off the craziness that is 2019? We sure are. You devoured our previous roundupsof mind-expanding stories, so we’ve curated six more of the weirdest, WTF-inducing items sure to send you into a google tailspin. This time, we’ve got stories so strange they’ll hopefully take your mind off our unpleasant reality. Get your tin foil hats ready, and let’s dive in!

1. Mysterious blobs containing complex cells fell from the sky in a small Washington state town, causing residents to fall ill and drum up military conspiracies.

Featured on “Unsolved Mysteries,” the strange blobs coated the town of Oakville, Washington, half a dozen times in August 1994. Researchers discovered white blood cells and digestive bacteria in the blobs, and townspeople who came into contact with the strange substance became ill and suffered serious flu-like symptoms. The appearance of the blobs coincided with an increased military presence in the skies above Oakville that August, leading to speculation of possible biological experimentation.

2. Famed astronomer Tycho Brahe had a pet elk who died from a fall after drinking too much beer.

A common 16thcentury problem, I’m sure. Scientists are often known for being eccentric, but Brahe, a wealthy nobleman who lived in a castle and was possibly murdered due to his affair with the Queen of Denmark, is a cut above the rest. (Speaking of cuts, he lost a large chunk of his nose in a 1566 sword duel — classic scientist stuff.) His pet elk loved beer so much it died after a drunken fall down the stairs in a Danish nobleman’s home.

3. In 2008, twin sisters Ursula and Sabina Eriksson experienced a shared psychosis, and a film crew caught them repeatedly flinging themselves into traffic.

Viewer beware, footage of the Eriksson twins is disturbing. Britain’s “Motorway Cops” happened to be filming that day, and their camera crew recorded the women avoiding police restraint to repeatedly throw themselves in front of speeding cars on a busy highway. Did the twins have a psychic link? Did they both look at one of the baddies from “Bird Box”? We have no answers. Ursula Eriksson was committed to a mental hospital and Sabina Eriksson was released back into society; still experiencing psychosis, she murdered a stranger shortly after that.

4. Kowloon Walled City — a lawless, high-rise tenement in Hong Kong that housed nearly 50,000 people in just 6.5 acres of land — existed for decades before being demolished in 1993.

Although it seems ripped from a dystopian sci-fi flick, the Kowloon Walled City existed under both Chinese and British jurisdiction, leading to neither country quite claiming rule over the self-sufficient pocket of crowded apartments and shops. Crime thrived in the ungoverned maze, and residents typically traveled among corridors carrying umbrellas, as thousands of leaking pipes dotted the makeshift ceilings.

5. Millions of people around the globe report hearing “The Hum,” a low-frequency buzzing sound that may or may not be real.

“The Hum” — is it feedback from mechanical devices? Radio waves? A particularly bad case of tinnitus? Or is it all in the hearers’ minds? Researchers haven’t conclusively decided whether or not The Hum is real, but sufferers would say otherwise.

via GIPHY

6. A stalker who dubbed themselves the “Watcher” terrorized a New Jersey family so effectively they sold their million-dollar home before ever moving in.

Let’s end this on a nightmare-fueling note, shall we? New homeowners in Westfield, New Jersey, were terrified to receive multiple anonymous letters from the “Watcher” shortly after buying the property in 2014. The stranger claimed their family had been surveying the property for decades, and now it was their turn to do the watching. “Do you need to fill the house with the young blood I requested?” wrote the stranger in one letter. “Once I know their names I will call to them and draw them out to me.”

Talking Aliens, “Nothing But Trouble” and More with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi

January 24, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

In December, we met up with Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd at Harrah’s Resort outside of San Diego, California, following a Blues Brothers performance with The Sacred Hearts band. They’ll be gracing our February Entertainment Issue cover — subscribe or find a dispensary near you to get the full scoop.

For now, whet your appetite with some conversations we had about “Saturday Night Live,” aliens and Aykroyd’s directorial debut, “Nothing But Trouble,” which we simply couldn’t fit into our cover story. (But don’t worry, there’s more alien talk in the cover, story, too. There was alotof alien talk. But that’s what happens when I’m in charge of asking the questions and a UFO enthusiast like Aykroyd is kind enough to indulge me.) Hit it!

Casting SNL with the Blues Brothers

When pressed to give their dream “Saturday Night Live” cast line-ups, including members from any year, living or dead, Jim Belushi has an immediate answer for me: “1976. That cast was the best cast in all of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and it included Mr. Bill Murray. That’s the dream cast, don’t you think?”

The 1976 crew also included his brother, John, as well as Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase and Gilda Radner, to name a few.

Aykroyd reflects for a moment, then answers, pausing between responses: “Well, outside of that one, I would say … Phil Hartman, Chris Farley …  Jan Hooks … and then I love the women today — Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and, of course, Kristen Wiig—”

“Tina Fey!” adds Belushi.

“That’d be a pretty good cast right there,” agrees Aykroyd.

Aykroyd on Aliens

Besides Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge, Aykroyd is perhaps the most well-known celebrity supporter of the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, and appeared in the 2005 documentary “Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs.”

I tell him about my history with sleep paralysis, also known as hypnagogic paralysis, and my interest in UFO-deniers blaming sightings on the phenomenon. Nonbelievers often claim that many, if not all, extraterrestrial experiences are a mere trick of the mind.

“I think in some cases it’s hypnagogic paralysis,” muses Aykroyd, “and people … just can’t move because they’re so tired and paralyzed, but I think that if you look — there’s a lot of cases where it’s genuine — genuine interface. And [aliens are] basically using a device to shut down your neurotransmitters and make you sleep. And they have the technology to do that. So I would say some are real, and some are just sleep paralysis … I was with a guy yesterday who told me about his experience, where he had the little creatures come in, and float him through the wall … I’ve never had that, thank god.”

Talking Aliens, “Nothing But Trouble” and More with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi

One of the members of our entourage cuts in, wondering if most alien contact happens at nighttime. Aykroyd’s demeanor is that of a president during a fireside chat. He’s happy to answer, giving reflective pauses throughout: “Well … Lonnie Zamora was wide awake when he pulled his patrol car up to a craft and saw two creatures get out … Herb Schirmer, Nebraska highway patrolman, same thing … Voronezh, Russia … 700 people saw two different craft[s], two different types of creatures come down, and they were awake.”

The Cult Status of “Nothing But Trouble”

I tell Aykroyd I’m a big “Nothing But Trouble” fan. The 1991 commercial-flop-turned-cult-classic starred himself, Chevy Chase, John Candy and Demi Moore; critics panned the horror-comedy upon release, but in some circles it’s now upheld as an underrated gem.

“Oh, really?” he laughs. “Okay. Alright. That’s, uh — young people like that movie.” He’s clearly bemused.

Belushi cuts in: “Which one?”

“The film that ended my directing career,” Aykroyd quips.

“I [heard] the greatest quote from Bill Murray,” offers Belushi. “He said, ‘Directing a film is like stacking worms to the moon.’”

Aykroyd laughs: “Yeah, yeah.”

Belushi continues: “Actors, when they direct a film, they go, ‘Man —’”

“You don’t want to do it again,” Aykroyd finishes for him. “It was a little dark,” he admits of the film, “but it does hold up as a serviceable comedy. There’s some great moves in that movie, there really are.”

Talking Aliens, “Nothing But Trouble” and More with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi

But they opened against “Silence of the Lambs” and “Sleeping with the Enemy,” he notes, adding, “And we opened the day of Desert Storm,” leading to poor box office numbers. “It lives on in video, and other forms—”

“And with Katie!” laughs Belushi, gesturing towards me.

For more with Belushi and Aykroyd, including their hopes for the Blues Brothers’ future, their perspectives on comedy today and Belushi’s foray into the cannabis world, be sure to pick up a copy of our February Entertainment issue.

Legalize(d) It!

January 14, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Cannabis hit the polls in November of 2018, and the elections resulted in many firsts worth celebrating. We saw Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, watched as a record-setting number of women and LGBT candidates ran for office and celebrated as individuals like Jared Polis, Sharice Davids, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Sylvia Garcia saw victory in their jurisdictions.

We wanted to spend some time looking at what November’s cannabis victories will look like in 2019, and how the cannabis sector is contributing to both Democratic and Republican campaigns.

DOPE Reviews | “The Upside”

January 11, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

The Upside (2019)

I definitely had a very concerning preconceived notion of how this movie was going to play out. On one hand, I have been burnt out on Kevin Hart’s fast-talking-quick-witted-neurotic delivery that seems to be his typecast in most films of late (please don’t let this be another “Ride Along.”) On the other hand, in my mind Bryan Cranston can do no wrong (I have two words: “Breaking Bad.”) I couldn’t see the chemistry working.

As the film began, I started to worry if my theory was going to be correct as Hart’s character, Dell, seemed to start in the same gear that most of Hart’s roles tend to stay in. However, once Cranston’s character was introduced, it added an “Odd Couple” balance to the dialogue. Their chemistry harkened back that of Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd in the classic film “Trading Places.”

The plot, that was inspired by a true story, takes place in New York city, where Dell’s life of crime and family neglect is starting to catch up to him. Out on parole, and trying to find work, Dell quickly goes from job interview to job interview really just looking to get his papers signed off on so he can keep his P.O. appeased with his unenthusiastic search for work.

After many pointless job leads, he finds himself at an interview, this time at the very wealthy estate of Phillip Lacasse. Assuming the job was for a janitorial position, he quickly falls in line with the other seemingly over-qualified candidates waiting their turn. After waiting for hours, Dell bursts into the interview room unannounced to quickly discover that Mr. Lacasse is quadriplegic and is in fact looking for a live-in caretaker, not a janitor. Even though Dell is obviously unqualified for the job, much to the dislike of Phillip’s key executive Yvonne (Kidman), Phillip finds something in him and he feels compelled to offer him the job.

The two venture into an odd friendship that leads to the heart and soul of the movie’s theme: everyone has their own set of problems (even filthy rich white guys.) Hart and Cranston’s chemistry is perfect for the film. The same panache Murphy and Aykroyd found in the aforementioned “Trading Places” is what keeps the film’s heavy subject matter light and charming. Even the most awkward scenes involving catheters and bed pans become comic gold.

I was also delighted to see that the screenwriters included a scene (or two) in which Dell introduces Phillip to medical cannabis to help alleviate his pain. While it’s nothing new to see movie characters smoke the ganja, it felt timely in the sense that we as a country are looking at the plant through new eyes, and the blatant confirmation that cannabis helps those in need definitely brought a smile to my face.

“The Upside”is like a warm hug from someone you love. It embraces you and reminds you that we as humans have a lot more in common than we may think. Grab a loved one and go see this movie.

German Techno Boyband FJAAK Talks Cannabis

January 7, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

You might have never heard of FJAAK, but tens of thousands of people around to globe love them. They boast more than 120 ,000 followers on Facebook, 90,000 followers on Instagram, and multiple YouTube videos with 400K hits or more.

The cannabis-friendly German electronic boy-group produces “driving, energetic rave tracks, which range from warm house to wild warehouse techno, with jacking U.K. garage and breakbeat or hardcore influences.”

“Most of our tracks are done entirely on analog equipment, as we use them as our main instruments,” they told DOPE.

Based in Berlin, the three members of FJAAK have been making music together since childhood. Before Felix Wagner, Aaron Röbig and Kevin Kozicki united as FJAAK in the late 2000s they already had individual projects. They finally made their first release as a band in 2012 and followed up in 2013 with their first vinyl releases – “Remember Me” (Klasse Recordings) and “Mind Games” (Baalsaal).

Following another release for Klasse — 2014’s “Po’ Folk” — they released their first record on Modeselektor‘s 50 Weapons imprint and did several 12″ EPs later on, including a split release alongside their friend Rødhåd. When 50 Weapons ended around 2015, they moved to Modeselektor‘s main label, Monkeytown, and released their first self-titled debut album “FJAAK”. They will soon be releasing their second album, “Havel,” on their own, self-titled label.

Beyond techno music, the guys at FJAAK, who interview as a single unit, are well known for their love of cannabis. Their social media posts often feature them smoking up in strange places or weird attires. Interested in learning more about their love for the good herb, DOPE Magazine sat down with FJAAK for a nice conversation.

FJAAK’s Love Of Cannabis

The guys’ love of weed started when they were 16 or 17 years old.

“One year later we started to use it more regularly. At the beginning we were trying to do it as little as possible because everybody would tell you it’s a bad drug and will fuck up your entire life,” they said. “It took us some time to get around that and avoid being judged as a stupid lazy weed smoker, but after this period we realized our love and became ready for this amazing world full of cannabis!”

In fact, one of the band’s members is a legal cannabis patient in Germany, enjoying the world of controlled and legal medical care.

Cannabis And Art

Next up, we wanted to know how cannabis influences FJAAK’s art — they say weed plays a significant role in their music.

“In the early stages of our musical project(s) we started to use it [cannabis] whilst we were working,” they told DOPE. “It opens our minds and helps us delve deeper into our material. We can follow the same flow for hours on and on throughout day and night until we achieve something. It all depends on personal preference and tolerance because for some people it can be horrible to work on anything while they’re under the influence of cannabis, whilst others seem to reach their full creative potential.”

Best.Joint.Ever

We then inquired about the story behind the guys’ best joint. They had to think hard about it. “There would be a hundred stories because it gets better and better; they continue to top each other until something really magic happens … especially when you grow your own plants and smoke your own bud,” they said.

“Back then when we were teenagers we had some time and possibilities to make moments like this possible and share them with our friends and beloved ones. Right now, with all the traveling and so on we are more nomadic consumers — almost weed tourists,” they added.

In conclusion, we asked them to pick one quote from a book, movie, or song, etc. that relates to marijuana. They went for a phrase from the movie “How High.”

At one point, Jamal (played by rapper Redman) says “If I study high, take the test high, get high scores.”

“It just brings us back to the good old carefree youth we all enjoyed and also reminds us of the way we used to rock it,” the FJAAK boys explained, ending the chat with a piece of advice: “Do not get caught [smoking where it’s illegal].”
