White Mountain Health Center: Healing High Up on the Mountain

January 23, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

White Mountain Health Center – Sun City, AZ

White Mountain Health Center is an award-winning destination dispensary nestled between Phoenix and Sun City at the base of the beautiful White Tank Mountains and home to Amy & Al’s edibles and Sweet Science concentrates. Decorated with cannabis art and apothecary artifacts, this one-stop shop features a comfortable waiting area, spacious product floor, express window and a medicinal merch desk brimming with accessories, glass pipes and more. In addition, WMHC also offers delivery services and hosts their kitchen and lab on site, meaning their edibles and concentrates are always fresh!

The People

Inspired by the devotion of cannabis activist and owner Butch Williams, this self-described “mom and pop shop of the industry” works closely with its patients and the community.  Coupled with years of research provided by medical director Dr. Sue Sisley,WMHC’s collective knowledge and kindness can be seen at every level of the business. “We are family-oriented, patient-driven — we love our employees and we stay true to our values,” declares wholesale manager Amy Buchholz. “We take pride in the quality of our medicine and what we do, as well as taking care of — and educating — our patients.” I certainly found this to be the case as my upbeat budtender Nisha gave me a tour of their impressive selection.

The Product

WMHC’s tiered flower system offers an average of 35-40 strains at any given time, 15 of which are provided by their personal grow, featuring a few of my favorites like Pre-98 Bubba, Chemdog 4 and Grand Daddy Purp, aka The Cream. Their expanding edibles program delivers sweet and savory morsels including honey, capsules, confections and more, all of which are accurately dosed, potent and made with quality ingredients, ranging from 30mg THC candies to a 400mg THC brownie. In addition to their selection of tinctures and topicals, they also deliver an excellent offering of concentrates from their brand line that includes cartridges, shatter, RSO, live resin diamonds and their new oil syringes. I also discovered an array of industry favorites like Baked Bros, Uncle Herbs, High Grade, Green Halo, Kiva and Timeless. I found everything I was looking for and more, making WMHC a top-shelf dispensary that is well worth the journey.

Lemon Stroopwafel: Sweet and Sour, Infused With Flower

January 23, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Lemon Stroopwafel by Dutch Girl

A small waffle with immense intoxicative effects? The future of edibles is officially here. Dutch Girl’s sativa-charged, lemon-flavored stroopwafel, based on the famous treat of the Netherlands, are sweet and citrusy, THC-infused miniature desserts as energizing as they are sedative —and all too tempting to eat! At roughly 10mg each, I was able to proportionately dose myself by eating just one and felt its day-brightening, uplifting effects within the hour. Soft, chewy and all-around pleasing to the senses while invoking a pleasant mood, Dutch Girl lemon stroopwafels are the perfect pick-me-up snack on a let-you-down kind of day.

California Highway Patrol Arrests Licensed Cannabis Delivery Drivers

January 22, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

california-highway-patrol-arrests-licensed-cannabis-delivery-drivers

While one of the goals of legalizing cannabis is to drastically reduce the number of people arrested for possession of the plant, it unfortunately can’t put an end to all arrests. Though there are still crimes related to marijuana, especially illegal sales and transportation, not all arrests fall into perfect black and white categories, as is the case with two former California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers who were arrested after a traffic stop by current CHP.

“It appears the CHP will stop at nothing to disrupt the lawful and legal transport of items involved in the medicinal cannabis industry,” Barry and Clemann said in a press release.

Rich Barry and Brian Clemann – the former CHP officers – now own Wild Rivers Transport, which is a licensed cannabis transport business. At the time of the arrest they weren’t transporting cannabis, but were simply collecting a payment for cannabis oil when they were stopped. A police canine detected cannabis and the vehicle was searched.

After identifying themselves as prior CHP officers the pair found themselves being arrested for suspicion of illegal possession of concealed firearms and possession of more than $100,000 derived from the unlawful sale, possession for sale, transportation or manufacturing of a controlled substance.

CHP spokeswoman Jaime Coffee said in an email interview that “in order to legally transport cannabis in California for commercial purposes, a person must possess the appropriate (Bureau of Cannabis Control) license and comply with the BCC administrative regulations.”

What this means is that Barry and Clemann did nothing illegal, since they are a licensed distribution business and they have said that they carried their license from the Bureau of Cannabis Control.

This arrest appears to have no basis. The only issue appears to stem from the fact that the CHP officers seem to have mistaken their identification as “prior” officers and instead heard “retired” officers, according to a press release where they were accused of calling themselves retired police officers. However, even at that, the arrests are for cannabis-related crimes that they were not even committing as they are a licensed business.

Kumin, the attorney representing Barry and Clemann, said in an email interview that “the fundamental issue here is whether the CHP is going to follow the will of the voters of California and the Legislature and stop cooperating with federal authorities in the ongoing federally instigated war on cannabis.”

The pair are suing the California Highway Patrol in San Francisco Superior Court, where they are hoping for a ruling that directs state and local governments not to interfere with the legal distribution of marijuana.

Parisa Rad: MJ Momma Showing How Cannabis Helps Kids

January 22, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

For Parisa Rad, cannabis has always been a medicine. Since first using the herb to deal with PTSD symptoms after being told her daughter died during childbirth, only to discover her breathing minutes later, Rad now shows other mothers how cannabis can help them. Her MJ Momma Consulting business teaches other moms the healing power of cannabis, and she serves as market co-leader with Marvina Thomas for Phoenix Women Grow. Rad’s daughter, Yazy, was born blind and with cerebral palsy, and spent six months in the NICU.

“Carrying that was very challenging at times … I used [cannabis] to get through college,” Rad shares. “When I became a professional and joined the workforce, that became unacceptable … so I went to prescription drugs.”

For a while, that worked. When Yazy was 14, she underwent spinal fusion surgery, was prescribed opiates for recovery, and developed superior mesenteric artery syndrome. That rare, life-threatening condition, which causes the lower intestine to collapse, changed everything — Yazy had to feed from a tube. Believing pharmaceuticals weren’t the answer, Rad turned to cannabis in an attempt to help her eat. It worked. The Make-A-Wish Foundation scored Yazy Justin Bieber tickets, and a steady diet of RSO and infused edibles got her out of bed.

Parisa Rad: MJ Momma Showing How Cannabis Helps Kids

“I knew it had made me feel better, but I didn’t know it as a true medicine, like we know now that it is,” Rad declares. “[Cannabis] opened my eyes to the way it can treat several conditions; not just the nausea and the pain, but the depression [and] the anxiety. My daughter was loving food, she was going back to school, she was living a normal life again, all things considered.”

Unfortunately, a recent Arizona court ruling declared Yazy’s much-needed concentrates illegal, so Rad took her to New Mexico in the summer of 2018. There, Yazy’s stomach twisted, requiring emergency surgery at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and she is now in palliative care for gastroparesis.

Rad, boldly ignoring the legal risks involved with concentrate use in Arizona, has Yazy using a full regimen of cannabis products — including colleague Marvina Thomas’ 420 Skincare, tinctures from Health’s Angels and hemp RSO via the ECHO Connection. “Immediately, she felt better,” Rad describes. “[Cannabis] immediately made her quality of life improve.” Rad’s fight for access to medicine continues, but she isn’t giving up any time soon.

Wubba Sauce: Raw Garden’s Clean Green Concentrate

January 22, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Wubba Sauce by Raw Garden

Raw Garden’s Wubba Sauce concentrate develops great flavors over the course of a few dabs. I tasted hints of lime, then lemon; it became so aromatic and sweet, I even encountered moments of honey and lavender. It’s incredibly clean, and I enjoyed dabbing it tremendously. With a subtle but strong onset, Wubba Sauce is a graceful, smooth high with a lovely essence. This strain will not immobilize you as much as you might think an indica hybrid could — it’s friendlier and more inspiring. The sauce is made using Raw Garden’s single-source, Clean Green Certified, fresh-frozen, whole-plant flowers — and you can tell. It’s a quality concentrate that doesn’t disappoint.

How Long Should Legalization Take?

January 21, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

how-long-should-legalization-take

Despite what you may think of when reading the title of this piece, I’m not talking about “legalization” as an abstract policy concept; I’m talking about the proposing, voting on and implementation of cannabis legalization in a specific state.

We’ll use New York as an example. By all accounts, the state of New York is on the precipice of approving recreational marijuana legalization. If all goes well, the legislature will pass a legalization bill and the Governor will sign it, kicking off a series of deadlines and meetings leading up to implementation.

But it’s not that simple. From The Associated Press:

While there’s broad agreement on the idea of legalization, there’s no consensus on a long list of details that must be figured out first.

Taxes and regulations must be approved. Rules for licensing retailers must be written. A new government entity may have to be created. Local governments will have to be brought in. Even after a bill passes, it could take a year or more for any pot shops to open, based on what’s happened in other states and New York’s own experience with medical marijuana.

It seems like a forgone conclusion that it takes a couple of years to pass and enact a legalization measure. It seems much of this delay comes from the still deep-seated belief held by many that cannabis is a dangerous substance that needs to be tightly restricted and heavily regulated, lest it get loose and destroy the very fabric of our society.

Things learned early are hard to forget. I remember D.A.R.E. I remember being pummeled verbally for a few years about how marijuana use leads to all manner of degeneracy and health problems. The remnants of the stigma around cannabis cause many to believe that legalization should be a few hundred pages of regulations covering every possible aspect of a theoretical industry; something that contains a clause for every contingency.

But what if it’s not? What if a state government just outlines what needs to happen, lets an industry develop, then reacts accordingly?

Yes, I know, that will lead to a “wild wild west” (an over-used phrase if ever there was one) of marijuana. Adults will be buying marijuana willy-nilly all over the place. And my question is: so what?

California was the “wild wild west” of marijuana for 20 years, and what happened? A lot of people grew, sold and consumed marijuana legally. That’s it. No one overdosed and died from marijuana. Millions of patients had better lives because they had easier access to their medicine. Yes, the horror…the horror.

It’s not like a simpler approach isn’t possible with cannabis law reform. Look at Oklahoma. I’ve covered the state quite a bit on our video show Cannabis News and things are moving quite fast there. After what most would deem a rocky start, the medical marijuana program in Oklahoma has gone from non-existent to in place and showing explosive growth in the space of 6 months. And what will happen in Oklahoma? A lot of people will grow, sell and consume cannabis legally. Tens of thousands of patients will find relief.

The horror.

Wolf Pac Cannabis: The Best Buds on Federal Boulevard

January 21, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Wolf Pac Cannabis – Denver, CO

A small dispensary on South Federal, Wolf Pac Cannabis is quite easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there. Having recently celebrated its one year anniversary, it’s already one of Denver’s best-kept secrets. Although the building itself doesn’t particularly stand out, the layout inside is nice and cozy, and the flower is so good that you’ll never be able to drive past the building without wanting to go inside. I like the fact that it isn’t too crowded and has ample nearby parking, as it’s a little outside the city. It’s also in the best part of town if you’ve got the munchies and are craving some dim sum or a big warm bowl of pho.

Wolf Pac Cannabis - Denver, CO

The People

The employees at Wolf Pac were warm and friendly, even though I showed up right before closing on a Sunday night. Having never visited before, they were quite enthusiastic to show me the selection, as well as their best-selling products. They cultivate most of their flower, but have also been sourcing some more exotic and unique West Coast strains. If you’re as lucky as I was, you might get to meet Yogi, the store French Bulldog — Yogi, if you’re reading this, I love you.

Wolf Pac Cannabis - Denver, CO

The Product

Upon seeing their flower for the first time, I instantly understood why so many of my friends drive out of their way to buy herb from Wolf Pac. Even though their product selection as a whole is excellent, it’s evident that flower is the star of the Wolf Pac show. For this caliber of cannabis, their prices are ridiculous! Depending on the strain, you can get an ounce of flower for less than $100 out the door. A couple of strains from the ‘Exotic’ shelf that stood out to me included Biscotti, Gelato, Sunset Sherbet, Forbidden Fruit and Chem de la Chem. I also noticed a few of my favorite brands out of the corner of my eye, including Binske (live resin, pâte de fruit and chocolate bars), Coda (chocolate bars, bath bombs, essential oil roll-ons), Green Dot and Xiaolin Cannagars.

Moto Perpetuo Farm: Where Sustainability Is Key

January 21, 2019 by Staff Writer Leave a Comment

Oregon’s Moto Perpetuo Farm prides itself in organic farming, not only of cannabis but of produce. “We operate two locations, in Willamette Valley and in Southern Oregon, mostly due to the subtle climates,” notes David Hoyle, who operates the Willamette Valley facility.

Hoyle says that Moto Perpetuo has a simple philosophy: operating a sustainable, organic farm that’s part of the community. Since 2000, the farm has been supplying organic vegetables, fruits and herbs to local farmers markets and restaurants, but in 2016 the farm became state-licensed and began planting cannabis. “For us, sustainability and reducing waste are important, not only as farmers, but as people,” Hoyle remarks. “We take care of our families, and our employees and their families, and we take care of our farm because it’s our home; it’s our world here.”

Moto Perpetuo Farm: Where Sustainability Is Key

Moto Perpetuo’s practices include planting crops using native soil. “We only plant in ground soil, which we amend with minerals and organic nutrients,” Hoyle describes. “Of course, we harness the power and energy of the sun, so we don’t have massive electricity use like traditional indoor grows.” Hoyle also says that the farm supplements their hogs’ diets with trimmed cannabis leaves: “This is a closed-loop model to reduce our waste. Plus, the diet of the pig can affect the flavor of the fat and meat, from acorns to hazelnuts, so we decided to try it.”

“For us, sustainability and reducing waste are important, not only as farmers, but as people …” – David Hoyle, Moto Perpetuo Farm operator

The use of cannabis leaves to feed hogs was featured in a now-viral culinary video on Eater, a social media foodie site, which showed chefs butchering and tasting cannabis-fed pork.

Moto Perpetuo Farm: Where Sustainability Is Key

When it comes to the numbers, Hoyle said they have around 100 strain varieties and phenotypes of cannabis, ranging from hybrids, indicas and sativas. “We do two to three harvests per year at our Northern farm — each one is 3,000 plants. Smaller plants, faster cycles. But at our Southern farm, it’s bigger, full-season plants, 12 feet tall by 12 feet wide.”
